How Can You Tell the difference between a Mouse and a Rat?

If a homeowner has enough time to look at the rodent, they may be able to identify it correctly. However, when you’re in your kitchen something runs across your floor your fear and shock may hinder your ability to say, “oh that was a rat” or “oh that was a mouse.” Then you’re left thinking, “was that a rat or a mouse?”

Mouse vs. Rat – Size Matters

The typical House Mouse is anywhere from 2’’ to 4’’ in length, as opposed to the common, and much larger Rat (Norway Rat) which measures 7” to 9” in length. Of course, it may be easy to distinguish between the two if both are at adult size, but a juvenile (younger) Norway Rat that has not reached full size can look like an adult House Mouse.

Mice

  • Size: House mice measure 12 to 20 cm in length, including the tail, and weigh 12 to 30 grams.
  • Color: They may be white, brown or grey in color.
  • Head: Their snouts are triangular and feature long whiskers.
  • Tail: Mice have large, floppy ears and long, thin, hairy tails.

Rats

  • Size: Rats are medium sized to large rodents. However, rats may grow to be as long as 40 cm or more and weigh considerably more than mice.
  • Color: Their coats are white, gray, brown or black in color and are often soiled enough to leave grease marks on touched surfaces.
  • Head: The snout of the rat is blunter than that of the mouse.
  • Tail: Long tails that are commonly hairless and scaly.

Pro Prevention Tips

  • Inspect the foundation all the way around the home. Any crack, gap or hole that is 1/4" or larger needs to be repaired. In holes that are 2" or smaller, Xcluder Mesh Material or other industry standard rodent proofing should be used. In larger holes or gaps you may need to use sheet metal or hardware cloth with less than 1/4" mesh to repair the area.
  • Check all doors, door frames, windows and window frames. Replace any weather stripping that does not create a tight seal. Replace any broken windowpanes. Replace any damaged window or door screens. Repair any gap, hole or crack around frames that are 1/4" or larger. If gnawing damage is present on doors, a metal kickplate should be installed to prevent any additional gnawing. We recommend door sweeps made by Xcluder company.
  • Brick or stone houses can be very easy for rats to climb. As with pipes, you can paint a 12" band (at least 3 feet from the ground) using high gloss paint all the way around the structure to deter climbing.
  • Look at all utility entry points (line-in areas). Areas where utilities enter the home can also make easy access points for Mice & Rats. Make sure any gap or hole larger than 1/4" around the wire, cable or pipe is sealed using Xcluder Mesh, caulk, hardware cloth and mortar, sheet metal or other suitable material where needed.
