Carpenter bees are the B-52's of the bee kingdom. They look like super-sized bumble bees but have shiny black rear-ends.
Carpenter bees are usually pretty docile and seldom sting; but they do damage wood. The female carpenter bee makes her nest in untreated wood which is often found on house or soffit trim. The female starts by making a perfectly round entrance hole about the size of a dime and then she turns and hollows out the wood to make several egg chambers. In large numbers carpenter bees can cause considerable damage to your home. And this year's brood will often return to the same area next year.
