Mice or Rats? Which one are you dealing with?

If you think there are rodents on your property, the first step in solving the problem is determining the type of rodent. The Tel tale signs for Mice & Rats are similar, but there are unique traits listed below that can help tell them apart.

Mice (House Mouse, White footed Mouse & Dear Mouse)

Mouse

Mature mice grow to about 6-7 inches long (including its tail) and weigh ½ to 1oz. Mice have large ears and tiny black eyes. They have fine fur that can be grey, appearing black at times or brown and a 3-4 inch long, hairless tail.

Droppings

Mouse Droppings

Mouse droppings are less than ¼ inch and pointed on both ends. They are about the same size as a sprinkle on your ice cream (my apologies for the mental picture). Fresh droppings are shiny and putty-like in texture, while old ones are often dusty looking and lighter in color. However, different feces sizes will indicate that juveniles (young rodents) and adults are present, and lots of droppings may be an indication of a large infestation.

Gnaw marks

Mouse Gnawing

Gnaw marks on wood around the house also are a sign. Gnawed mouse holes are small, around the size of a dime.

Nests

Mice will shred insulation, paper, string, and other materials to build their nests indoors.

Noises

Both Mice & Rats are nocturnal. So, at night is when you are more apt to hear activity. Mice usually make noises such as the sound of little footsteps when they are in a wall, drop ceiling or an attic. They also make scratching noises when making their nests in these areas.

Rats (Norway Rats) Roof Rats are rarely found in our area

Rat

A mature rat can range from 11-19 inches long (including its tail) and weigh ½ to 1 pound. Rats are bigger than mice and will have coarse grey, brown or black fur and a fur-less, long, scaly tale.

Droppings

Rat Droppings

Norway Rat droppings are blunt at both ends. Rat droppings are ½ inch or larger. Fresh droppings are shiny and putty-like in texture, while old ones are often dusty looking and lighter in color. However, different feces sizes will indicate that juveniles (young rodents) and adults are present, and lots of droppings may be an indication of a large infestation.

Gnaw Marks

Gnawed Wire From Rats

Gnawed rat holes are larger, about the size of a quarter, with rough torn edges. Tooth marks about ⅛ inch long are typical of rats. Rats like to gnaw on the corners of deck lattice (to create easy access).

Nests

Rats (Norway Rats) usually nest outdoors in burrows deep in the ground. Look for baseball sized holes. They also may make their way inside the home and nest in lower levels of the home. Rats also tend to make louder thumping noises (larger animal) when nesting indoors (they can be very destructive).

Noises

Both Mice & Rats are nocturnal, so at night is when you are more apt to hear activity.

10 Simple Tips to Help Avoid Rodents

Fortunately, there are many ways you can help prevent rodents from entering your home.

  • 1. Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home, including areas where utility lines and pipes enter the home, using rodent proof material such as Xcluder fill material (available on Amazon)
  • 2. Install door sweeps on exterior doors, overhead garage doors and repair damaged screens.
  • 3. Screen vents and openings to chimneys.
  • 4. Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly.
  • 5. Keep attics, basements and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
  • 6. Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
  • 7. Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains that provide the perfect breeding site for rodents.
  • 8. Inspect items such as boxes, grocery bags and other packages brought into the home.
  • 9. Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and keep shrubbery trimmed and cut back from the house.
  • 10. Avoid using bird feeders around the home. Birds spill seed under the feeders. This will encourage rodents to enter the property and may even cause them to set-up shop where this food is readily accessible.
